What Kind of Ukulele Should You Buy?

There are different ukulele sizes, and all offer their unique share of benefits, drawbacks, and tone. The best type of ukulele will depend on your playing level, desired sound, and the kind of music you wish to play.

Soprano Ukuleles – This is the most popular and most recognized ukulele. Its sound is what most people associate with the ukulele. It is also considered the ‘standard’ ukulele in Hawaii because it’s closest in size to the original one.

The soprano has 12 to 15 frets, which are narrower than those on other ukuleles. This feature makes it easier to play different chords and is thus an ideal choice for beginners.

Concert Ukuleles – This is the next size after sopranos. While it has the traditional-sound, the concert ukulele is deeper, fuller, and louder than the soprano. Because the concert ukulele has wider frets, they’re an excellent choice for beginners with bigger hands.

Tenor Ukuleles – Being bigger than both soprano and concert ukuleles, the tenor ukes are louder and offer a deeper and fuller sound. The tenor is much popular among professional musicians. It can be fitted with a lower G string and high G string, unlike the concert and soprano that only use a high G string.

Baritone Ukuleles – The size of this ukulele is close to that of a standard guitar. The baritone ukulele is also tuned in the same way as the highest four strings on the guitar. Although the baritone ukulele retains the same uke sound and feel, it doesn’t sound as light as the concert or soprano ukuleles. The chord shapes and tuning is different from that of other ukuleles. As a result, the baritone is recommended for skilled players.
